What Changed in the 2026 PMP® Exam?

What actually changed
PMI refreshed the PMP® Examination Content Outline (ECO) in July 2026. The three domains — People, Process, Business Environment — are still there; what changed is the list of tasks underneath them.
This is not a "a few task names were reworded" revision. Tasks were renumbered, some were merged, and three topics moved to a different domain entirely. The consequence: a study plan built on the 2021 ECO is not merely incomplete, it is in places actively misleading.

The trap that catches people: same number, different task
The most dangerous property of the 2026 ECO is that the numbers were reused. If a question bank or a set of notes says "I.3", that number pointed at something entirely different in 2021:

The practical consequence is this: you cannot map old material by number. When carrying material forward to 2026 you have to go by the task title. Trusting the number produces quiet, hard-to-notice errors — the page looks right, only its subject is wrong.
The three topics that changed domain
This is the most structural change. Three topics that sat in Process (or People) in 2021 moved to Business Environment in 2026:

This is more than relabelling. Risk is no longer part of the 41%-weighted Process domain but of the 26%-weighted Business Environment. If you build your study plan around domain weights — and you should — where these three topics count directly affects how many hours you give them.
"Servant leader" was dropped
In the second edition of the Agile Practice Guide, PMI moved away from the long-standing term "servant leader" in favour of "supportive leader". The shift in emphasis is clear from the page counts alone: in the second edition "supportive leader" appears across 17 pages while "servant leader" is left on just 3.
If your material still frames the project manager as a servant leader, it is written against the first edition.
How to check the material you already have
Four questions will tell you whether something you bought or downloaded is current:
- Does it list 26 tasks? If not, it is built on the 2021 ECO.
- Which domain is risk in? If it shows under Process, it is old.
- Does it say "servant leadership"? That is not the second edition's term.
- Does its mapping rely on task numbers? If so, do not trust it.
If even one of those catches, do not rely on that source alone for the 2026 exam.
